Cord decided to get out of the car business in August 1937 and take up real estate in California, he sold his stake of the Cord Corporation – the holding company that controlled Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg and Checker automobiles, along with American Airways, Stinson Aircraft, and several other companies – to a group of investors operating as the Aviation and Transportation Corporation. ATCO, in turn, shut down car manufacture at Auburn, Cord, and Duesenberg and sold the Auburn and Cord assets, including the rights to the Auburn and Cord names, to Dallas Winslow, a businessman who had become rich and famous by buying up the assets of other, smaller defunct automobile companies including Flint, Briscoe, Stearns-Knight, Peerless, Franklin, Wills St. Clair, Haynes, and dozens more. He got all but the tooling and dies, which Norman DeVaux bought and in turn marketed to Hupp and Graham.<br /><br />Winslow apparently had little interest in the Cord and Auburn names and trademarks. Instead, he spent the next 20 years marketing, selling, and in some cases reproducing parts for those cars. Pray, on the other hand, saw the potential in the defunct marques, and so approached Winslow in 1960 to inquire about what Winslow had been calling the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Company. On a shop teacher’s salary, he managed to put together the $75,000 deal and then move 350 tons of parts and the operations of the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Company to a former pickle factory in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. <br /><br />Interestingly enough, Pray told his biographer, Josh Malks, that he later discovered that neither the Cord nor Auburn names were registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office; Winslow had let them expire while he owned the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Company. Pray ended up spending $500 each to re-register the names – Cord in 1963 and Auburn in 1966. “If I’d known that all I had to do was spend $1,000, I’d have had me the Cord and Auburn names and wouldn’t have had to drag all that stuff down here.” <br /><br />While Pray was happy enough to sell parts to Auburn and Cord collectors and restorers, he really wanted to put the Cord and Auburn automobiles back into production, something he needed both names to do. In August 1964 he succeeded with the former, basing a downsized (8/10-scale, as its name would later declare), Buehrig-designed, Royalite-bodied version of the Cord 810 on a custom chassis using a Corvair drivetrain under the hood to provide front-wheel drive. Production of what would prove to be one of the world’s first continuation cars stalled after about 100 were built and after Pray left the Cord Automobile Company, but he somehow retained the Cord name through the ordeal. <br /><br />Though he never again tried to resurrect the Cord name, Pray did make sure to keep the trademarks registered afterward, both to continue selling Cord-branded reproduction parts and to license the Cord name to other companies like Mattel and Hallmark. The field is located near the base of Mount Sentinel, roughly between what is now the University of Montana and South Avenue 1926 - Bob Johnson purchases a Swallow bi-plane for $2500 and continues his flying lessons with instructor Nick Mamer, believed to be the first pilot to ever fly over Glacier National Park. Bob Johnson decides to start Johnson Flying Service to teach others how to fly<br /><br /> 1927 - Bob Johnson, in an interview with a University of Montana journalism student, says he believes airplanes will eventually make regular stops in Missoula. Decades later, that same journalism student, who thought Johnson was crazy for making such an incredible statement, would eventually fly out of Missoula International Airport aboard a large passenger airliner; a group of men meet at the Palace Hotel to discuss Missoula's future in aviation. Missoula, it was felt, needed an airport to succeed. City businessman Harry O. Bell was elected president of the Missoula chapter of the National Aeronautic Association. Their first act was to secure an airmail route to Butte and Salt Lake City; Walter Beck secures a 60-day option on eighty acres of land just east of the Missoula County Fairgrounds. The County officially purchases the 80 acres of land, as well as an adjacent strip to construct an east-west runway. Total cost was $5000. A northwest-southeast runway was later built.<br /><br />1934 - Northwest Airways inaugurates regular mail and passenger service to Missoula at the Garden City Airport </div><br />1938 - President Roosevelt authorizes W.P.A. funds for the construction of Missoula’s third airport. The Missoula County Airport Board purchases 1300 acres of land seven miles west of Missoula adjacent to Highway 10 West as the site for a new airport. Since the Forest Service needed access to an airport, and Missoula County needed heavy equipment to build the new airport, a deal was struck between the two parties. The airport board gave the Forest Service a perpetual easement at the airport site, while the Forest Service granted the use of their equipment for construction. The agreement eventually led to Missoula becoming a major center for aerial firefighting and research. The new airport would feature four runways each a mile or more in length, capable of accommodating any airplane in service at the time. Total estimated cost, including the land, for the new Missoula County Airport: $1.5-$2 million <br /><br />1940 - July 12, Rufus Robinson and Earl Cooley become the first firefighters to parachute from a Johnson Flying Service airplane to extinguish a fire in the Pacific Northwest Region. Flint and Nick Mamer were inseparably connected with the pioneering of aerial activities in the Northern Rocky Mountain Region. Then while flying as a chief pilot for Northwest Airlines on a Lockheed Super Electra during a flight from Seattle to Minneapolis, parts of the tail section were torn from the aircraft about 15 miles northeast of Bozeman, Montana and the plane went into a dive.<br /><br />Mamer, the copilot and eight passengers died instantly. Later, an investigation revealed that the tail structure had failed on the new design from what is known as "natural resonance, or period of vibration". The new field al Ford's was not ready yet. It was early spring and ice was still on the lake. Walter Lees was the test pilot. He took off against a light wind and headed out across the lake. Then, something happened. A couple of dips and down he came, landing on the ice which was fortunately thick enough to hold.<br />     It took us ten minutes to run out to where the ship stood on the ice and find what was the matter. Walter was furious.<br />     The windshield had blown in against his control wheel and he had to push the celluloid back in place with his foot before he could free the controls to land. Windshields, from then on, were made much stronger.<br />     A few days later he took off again---this time over land.<br />     Frost in the carburetor brought him down once more---in a swamp! the Switch Pitch Super Turbine 300 and 400

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">The vanes in the torque converter are adjustable with the flip of a 12volt switch. <br /><br />These have a special fluid pump, input shaft and torque converter. When the trans is in "normal", low stall mode, the pump and vanes work like a typical, stock converter with a 1800rpm stall. When 12 volts is applied to the pumps servo, some of the fluid is redirected through a hole in the center of the trans input shaft, into the converter. The vanes in the torque converter are mounted on pivots with a cam type level attached to each vane. The fluid acts with another servo in the converter to change the pitch of the vanes, increasing the stall speed to 2200rpm. The stator blades moved from high to low position by an electrical solenoid and a stator valve, controlled by a switch on the throttle linkage. At light to medium throttle, the stator blades were at 32°, providing a torque multiplication of 1.8:1 and a converter stall speed of approximately 1800 rpm. At ⅔ to full throttle, the blades switched to the 51° high position, giving torque multiplication of 2.45:1 and a stall speed of approximately 2300 rpm. The blades were also set to the high position at idle to limit creep when stopped in Drive. <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">“Is the engine noise coming from the speakers?” Agonizingly, yes. The M3/M4’s interior sound comes courtesy of special effects.<br />When pressed, BMW engineers reluctantly explain that the sound doesn’t come from a pre-recorded soundtrack or an engine-mounted microphone. Instead, a sensor analyzes what the engine should sound like according to rpm and load. Then, it uses a “synthesizer” to replicate that sound and pipes it through the speakers.<br />Like the digitally rendered humans in the movie The Polar Express, you immediately know something is off—and that particular something is creepy. Also off-putting is the character of the synthesized engine noise, which sounds like a bass-heavy V-8 rather than the sharp rasp of an inline six. Onlookers outside the car are treated to blats of real, raucous inline-six sound as the exhaust flaps kick rudely open.
